Riccardo Salvadori's (1866–1927) illustrations for Lettura magazine — contrasting and executed with a refined technique — look stunning on the printed page. Seeking to capture reality in all its immediate authenticity, the artist, as I see it, shared the tendencies of the verismo artistic movement that had swept Italy at the time. Characteristic examples of this include Riccardo Salvadori's illustrations for Grazia Deledda's novel Marianna Sirca and the illustrations published here for Neera's historical novel Crepuscule of Liberty (Crepuscoli di libertà). Neera was the pseudonym of the Italian writer Anna Maria Zuccari (1846–1918). The action of the illustrated novel takes place against the backdrop of the events of Five Days in Milan in 1848, a key episode of the Italian Risorgimento, written by the writer shortly before her death. The novel stands as one of her works, reflecting a mature exploration of how historical shifts impact individual liberty.

Riccardo Salvadori (1866–1927) was an Italian watercolorist and illustrator; he trained at the Academies of Fine Arts of Lucca and Naples (Accademia di Belle Arti di Lucca e Napoli); Salvadori worked for Corriere della Sera under editor Silvio Spaventa Filippi; from 1903 the artist illustrated Romanzo Mensile, from 1908 the weekly Corriere dei Piccoli, and children's stories in the Biblioteca dei Ragazzi. Riccardo Salvadori apparently began publishing in the monthly magazine La Lettura in 1912. His works look excellent on the printed page: executed with a polished technique and close to theatrical dramaturgy, they vividly illuminate the psychological state of the characters as the plot unfolds. A striking example of this is Riccardo Salvadori's illustrations for Grazia Deledda's novel "Marianna Sirca," published in 1915 in La Lettura.
